Abstract

In this monograph the author describes a method of categorizing double stars into three general categories by actual and projected separation, by difference in space motion, and by tidal limit. The author also suggests a defined outer limit to the physical association of a double star. Visual double stars are selected as a regular observing program for astrometry of position angle and angular separation then, after observations and measurements are taken, actual and minimum separations are determined and adjusted to reflect orbital position using the latest GAIA and WDS information. The doubles are then categorized as binary, common or similar space motion, and optical candidates.
